For many students, the college search begins—and ends—with the 30 schools that make this or that well-publicized “Top Colleges in the Nation” list. With 4,000 institutions of higher learning out there, the choice is understandably daunting—but it also means that the perfect match might be out there, waiting. That’s why a major focus of junior year will be developing a strong college list.
Of course, many of the “brand-name” universities we’ve all heard of are, indeed, excellent—and many of my students have gone on to attend them. However, what most allows a student to flourish is not what a school is named but how well it fits. I am committed to helping students of all abilities, all interests, and all backgrounds find the college that is perfect for them—whether it’s a liberal arts college in the rural midwest or a major research university in a metropolitan center. I am continually updating my knowledge base by researching and visiting colleges and universities across the country.
Once the college list is set, then the real work begins. Throughout the application season, I guide my students through every step of the process—from asking teachers for recommendation letters to filling out the Common Application to sending their test scores. With the college application process growing more complicated every year, I am there to answer all my students’ (and parents’) questions. Most importantly, I give my students the emotional support and encouragement they need to weather this demanding time, and I keep their stress in check by planning realistic timelines and assuring that they stay on track. With planning, organization, and some friendly guidance, college application time can be one of the most exciting and enriching periods of high school—no kidding!
